Summary: Zachary Baker has led a privileged life until he loses everything and is forced to move in with his brother Brian and brute of a brother-in-law Matt. He’s determined to turn his life around, but when his secrets begin to unfold everything starts to crumble.
Authors Note: AU fic. Brian is Zackys younger brother and therefore I’ve made him a Baker instead of a Haner.
Inspired by the play “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Tennessee Williams.

Zacky walked around aimlessly, lost in an unknown territory. It was dark, which was preferable to him, but also a bit intimidating. The fog was thick in this new environment making it harder to see where exactly he was at. The music was loud and frightening to a small man from a small town. As he stepped onto the sidewalk he was startled by two men being launched out of a bar mid-fight. His heart raced. He had to be lost, got off on the wrong stop somewhere or something.

There is no way my brother lives in a place like this he thought as he continued walking along the dirty road.

He found the little sign that said 632 Elysian Fields. This had to be wrong.

“Hey what’s wrong, you lost?” A tall lean man asked. He was attractive in his own sort of way, adorned with as many tattoos as Zacky himself. He was sitting on a couch outside of the small home smoking a cigarette. He didn’t look like the type of people Zacky and his brother would normally associate with.

“Um I was told to take a streetcar named desire, transfer to cemeteries and go six blocks until Elysian Fields,” Zacky said looking around puzzled. The entire journey had worn him out and he wanted nothing other then a cold drink and a warm bed.

“Well this is Elysian Fields, who are you looking for?” The man asked.

“My brother Brian Baker-er-Brian Sanders now I guess,” Zacky said in a small voice.

“Well you found it all right, he lives on the bottom I live on the top, the names Jimmy Sullivan,” the taller man said while putting out a hand. Zacky shook his hand weakly and gulped looking at the conditions his brother has been living in. The outside was falling apart, which didn’t give him much hope for the inside. A spiral staircase led up to the second story and that didn’t look very promising either.

“You just missed them though, they went to the pool hall down the street, I can let you in if you’d like,” Jimmy said gesturing to the door on his right.

Zacky nodded, “That would be nice thank you.”

Jimmy got up and opened the door letting in the shorter man. “It’s not much I guess, but it’s nice for the two of them.”

Zacky nodded again in response, but he was really thinking that the place was a ship wreck. Small was an understatement. It consisted of a dining area that was also part living space and part kitchen, which led into the bedroom and bathroom. The paint was chipping off the walls and the smell of cigarettes was burnt into every crevice. This was no way for his brother to be living and he couldn’t believe he hadn’t known sooner.

“Brian talked about you,” Jimmy said as Zacky inspected the place.

“Oh?”

“Yeah he said you were an English teacher?”

“Yes.”

“He showed us the pictures of your place too, huge place yeah? It must be hard to keep up with,” Jimmy continued. Zacky froze.

“I’d like to rest now,” he said staring down at his shoes. They were dusty now from all the dirt, the shining suede had been diminished. He couldn’t help but think it was a somewhat metaphor for his life.

“Oh. Well ok then I’ll just go down to the hall and get Brian then,” Jimmy said.

“I didn’t mean for that to come off as rude,” Zacky quickly countered as he looked up at the welcoming man.

“That’s alright, he’ll be over soon,” Jimmy said as he left the small space, leaving Zacky to his own thoughts.

Zacky sat down on a chair in the corner of the room. He could hear the faucet slowly dripping Every drip was taunting him, mocking what little sanity he had left. His breathing started to quicken as the room begin to spin and the music outside grew louder to his ears. Zacky shut his eyes, trying to block everything out. He could still hear it. A car honked outside and a cat screeched making him jump in fright. He was being paranoid.

Just then he spotted an open cabinet and recognized the bottle inside instantly. He walked over and took the bottle, finding a glass and some ice he poured himself some of the whiskey and quickly drank it down. He poured another glass before putting the bottle back where he had found it and slowly sipped on his drink. Zacky felt his nerves calm instantly, the sounds around him lowered to a soft hum as he finished off his second glass. He cleaned the cup and put it back just as the door opened and a familiar voice entered his ears.

“Zacky!” Brian beamed as he ran over to his brother.

“Brian! Oh God Brian, Brian, Brian!” Zacky said enthusiastically as he embraced the younger man. He had never been so happy for the familiar face in his life.

“Let me look at you brother! Don’t look at me though I look terrible right now, the lighting is shitty. Lets see turn around, you’ve gotten more tattoos haven’t you? Our parents always hated that about us, getting tattoos and such, but they look nice they really do. You shouldn’t be spending your money on that though, you should be trying to get out of this dump-oh God I didn’t mean to say that! I meant to say it was nice I’m so sorry, but anyway you haven’t said anything since you’ve walked in Brian!” Zacky said in one breath.

“You haven’t really let me say anything,” Brian said laughing.

“Oh yeah I’m sorry, well you talk and tell me everything while I look for some alcohol, I’m sure you have some around here you always liked your drinking, where could it be?” Zacky asked as he made his way to the cabinet and pulled out the bottle he had just put back a few minutes earlier.

“Hey you rest I’ll get the drinks, you want some coke with that? I’m sure we still have some coke in here,” Brian said looking in the small refrigerator.

“No coke for me Brian I’m a nervous wreck right now, I need it straight,” Zacky said with a chuckle as Brian poured his drink.

“So where is your husband at?” Zacky asked lazily as he sat down at the small table in the middle of the room.

“Oh he’s playing pool down at Billiards, he gets a lot of money that way y’know, he’s really good,” Brian said nodding as he handed Zacky the glass.

“Well if he makes good money doing it why doesn’t he move you two out of a place like this?” Zacky asked taking a sip of his drink.

“Zacky-” Brian said trying to defend his living space.

“No, no I’m sorry I just-In my wildest dreams I would never imagine you in such a place,” Zacky said shaking his head in disapproval.

“You’re making it into a bigger deal then it is, it’s a fine place for us, we don’t need anything extravagant,” Brian said looking down at his hands.

Zacky sighed taking another drink.

“Well that’s enough about that then,” Zacky said standing up and going over to a picture on the tiny fireplace. “Is this Matt?”

“Sure is, he’s a Master Sergeant in the Engineers’ Corp,” Brian said proudly as Zacky stared at the picture.

“Oh?”

“Yeah, he travels a lot though and hell Zacky it drives me insane when he’s gone,” Brian said with a frown.

“Well I guess that’s love,” Zacky said smiling politely. Brian nodded with a soft, whimsical smile. He obviously had his husband on the mind. Zacky sighed looking around the room. Many thoughts were clouding his own mind and he knew he had to tell Brian the reason he was here. Brian had been nice enough to not ask any questions, but they both knew they were looming in the air. Zacky downed the rest of his drink before crossing over to his only brother.

“Brian I know you’re wondering why I’m here and I figured I should probably tell you, but I know you’re going to reprimand me the second I spit it out I just know it. You’re going to blame me, but don’t forget you’re the one that left us all. You left me alone to come follow some romantic dream and I was alone back home so just don’t forget that,” Zacky said. Brian stared at Zacky with a shocked expression.

“Zacky I was in love, I-”

Zacky cut him short, “I know I’m just saying when I tell you this don’t go and start blaming me.” Brian could only nod at his older brother.

“We lost the plantation Brian,” Zacky said seriously. Brian gasped, utterly horrified.

“How did we lose it?”

“Oh yeah just ask me how it happened. You’re blaming me I can already tell Brian! How did we lose it? No money Brian! You weren’t there for any of it, you left me alone to deal with everything. The deaths Brian, you were there for the funerals, but that was all prettied up bullshit. You didn’t see the deaths, the last breaths, and you weren’t there for the aftermath of it all. Nobody left us any insurance Brian, no one, I had to pay for all of the funerals on my one teaching salary and that ain’t shit. So yes Brian sit there and accuse me of losing the place, but I tried my hardest, you were nowhere around!” Zacky yelled.

“Jesus Zacky! Calm the hell down,” Brian yelled back as he stood up and made his way to the bathroom. He had tears threatening to spill from his eyes and Zacky noticed.

“Brian don’t cry,” Zacky said feeling horrible for his words. He couldn’t control them though. He felt his ability to control anything he did lately slipping away.

“What do you expect me to do Zacky?”

“I’m sorry-” Zacky started, but was cut short as Brian slammed the bathroom door shut. He groaned sitting back in his chair. That was not how he meant for that to go.

Get yourself together Zacky thought as he took in a deep breath. Lately he’s felt like he was in some poorly produced play. He felt like he was moving slower than everybody else. The lights and the sounds were multiplied times ten. His world was just a tumbling mess.

The door suddenly slammed open and Zacky hopped up, moving into the bedroom. The man from the photo stood in the doorway yelling some obscenities at his friends outside. He laughed loudly, flipping off the men, and closed the door. He started taking off his button up shirt leaving himself in a gray wife beater. The large man stopped when he saw an unknown man standing against the wall.

“Who are you?” he asked defensively.

“Um I’m Zachary,” Zack said weakly.

“Oh… Bri’s brother Zachary?” Zack nodded as he nervously started playing with the tie around his neck.

“He didn’t say anything bout you comin how long you stayin for?” Matt asked as he untucked his wife beater.

“I’m not sure,” Zack answered even more timidly.

“Oh well that’s alright, you’re a school teacher yeah?” Matt asked as he lit up a cigarette.

“That’s right I teach English,” the jade eyed man said as he pulled out his own cigarette. Zack dug in his pockets for a lighter, but Matt had already walked over and lit it for him.

“Hey Brian you ok in there?” Matt yelled towards the bathroom, making Zack jump a bit.

“I’m fine!” Brian yelled back.

At that moment the music started to grow loud again. The room became fogged up as Zacks vision blurred. He started to feel sick and shaky. He breathed in deeply, trying to keep himself in check.

Don’t freak out he thought to himself as his head swam.

“Yeah I was never any good at English, cant even hardly talk it, but it don’t matter much. Brian talked a lot about you, he said you were married once,” Matt continued, not noticing Zacks mild panic attack.

“Yes, when I was younger, a lot younger,” he said crossing the room. He grabbed onto the wall taking a drag from his cigarette trying to keep calm.

“Yeah? What happened?”

Zack covered his ears as the sound of the music began to thunder in his head. The individual instruments had become impossible to make out, limited to one thunderous boom that was torturing him.

“He died,” Zack said through the loud noise, the room started to spin quickly as his sight began to fade.

Matt ran over and caught Zack just before he hit the ground.

----------
I somehow got the characters mixed up because I’m an idiot at times so if the names are messed up anywhere blame my beta for not catching it ^.^ haha jk. I’m pretty sure we got em all.

So yeah I wasn’t going to post this now, but I figured I should to show I am working on the requests I had.
